Back in UK

Well , arrived back home midday yesterday.
Just after landing at Heathrow we had heavy snow!!
What a contrast! About 35°C difference within 13 hours!
Journey home went without hitch - no delays.

The Elephant Festival should have been climax at end of holiday and I had been really looking forward to it.

It would have been lovely but they had no idea of crowd control (Jackie is Policewoman, she was very tempted to take over the entire organisation!) The crowds wanted to get closer look at elephants and dancers to get nice pics to bore their rellies, which meant those who did as they were asked and stayed seated saw bugger all!
Shame as we had returned to Jaipur especially to see it.

It was very colourful and there was nice happy atmosphere but it could have been much better.

So....

My Mini Adventure has come to an end.

I wasnt sorry to leave. I felt I had seen enough for now as we had fairly busy schedule.

Was looking forward to walking in clean air and streets.

But I am so glad I went.
I fully intend to return to India and see more. But will not spend any more time than necessary in big towns. They are all the same. Filthy and noisy.

India is a huge urinal.
Men peeing in public (yes, we have photos and video to prove it!)
Would have preferred to smell the Indian cuisine, spices and incense than their urine and garbage.

It was an education to experience it all though and Im really glad I saw the good and bad of Indian life.

Indian hospitality will be a lasting memory. OK, yes, we were paying them to stay there so they had their reputation to uphold and wanted a good review on their website!
But we felt genuinely welcomed by them and found them to be very friendly and helpful.
They sat and talked to us and wanted to help make our stay memorable but without being pushy.

Even many ordinary and poor people in the streets were pleasant. You do have to be on your guard tho as some are trying to entice you into their shop. You have to politely decline. They dont give up easily but you learn to deal with it. Never did these folk turn nasty or rude towards us even tho we werent always the same to them!!

Not once did I feel threatened and I would consider travelling alone in India possibly.
But its just nice to have company.

The only incident was in a park where alot of cricket was being played by young lads.

For some crazy reason they became a tad over-excited as we appeared.

People seemed to make a beeline for Jackie and she seemed to get pestered more than me. No surprise there then.....

But her patience ran out as one of these lads touched her bum. She grabbed the bat and threatened to whack them. They soon showed their true colours and disappeared as quickly as they had appeared!

They knew she meant it.

Mind you , she's a scary woman.
(hahahaha)
Still, it proved useful cos as she was being molested I was able to continue videoing in peace!!
To be fair I hadnt realised what they were doing.
Their behaviour was unacceptable.
We didnt want to play their stupid little games.
Its just not cricket.

Jackie is a great travel companion.
We get along just fine and have so much in common.
Same views on life, same priorities and attitudes.

Many nights we stayed up late chatting putting the world to rights when we should have been catching up on sleep!

I got some allergy to a bite on my eyelid on last night (exactly the same happened in Egypt).
I ended up looking like a complete freak and Jackie actually said she was glad I was leaving as she didnt want to be seen in public with me.

This was very hurtful.

Not.
It gave us yet another to thing to laugh about.

Passport control at Delhi weren't entirely convinced of my id though and she asked for a second opinion! That was a little worrying for a moment!

I would love to join Jackie for more travels at some point. Maybe in her big adventure or a future opportunity. Only cost will stop me.

My overall thoughts?

An interesting country with a rich history and culture.
Many genuine people who welcomed us with open arms.
Filth and dirt everywhere. You cannot escape it. Good place to be a rat.
Getting around is good by train, if you can put up with delays.
Homestays are great.

And my next trip....?

Probably stick to the trains again.
Probably have fairly strict program with room, travel and itinerary planned in advance as with this trip (not yet ready to be a complete Adventuress!)
Must learn to be bolder with tuk-tuk wallahs and traders.
Will try to see things outside of main towns. (Interestingly, our favourite sites had little or no mention in guide books)

In short, not much difference to this trip. But I may well be alone next time which of course makes it a whole new ball game.................

OH NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I AM CONSTIPATED!!
hahaha
Has to be better than the other stuff though. Hope it doesn't return cos I threw away my bag of bungs.
3 days since last update.
Overnight train to Jodhpur was delayed by 1 hour. Sitting on busy station platform after midnight playing 'I spy with my little eye' caused some amusement.
We found it quite funny too.
Otherwise uneventful journey. Of course we caused the usual commotion on boarding.
Oddly the train today back to Jaipur was quite empty. Are we sooo annoying that everyone is avoiding travelling with us?
Well, if you ever come to Jodhpur you HAVE to stay at Mandore Guest House, a few km N of the city.
It is a haven of tranquility even tho the usual street vendors are moments away. The accommodation is in round stone/mud huts set around a peaceful garden. A lovely family run it. They are welcoming, helpful, friendly and trusting. So trusting.
We worked out our own bill and they were happy. I don't think we overpayed them........!
The food was FANTASTIC and loads of it. ( Good job I was able to eat well by then!)
We loved this place and felt sad to leave.
What little we saw of the town was grotty as are all cities and towns but the main attraction is Meherangarh Fort. It is magnificent.
Built 15th C.ish with ornate stonework facades + beautiful palatial rooms.

Gt view of Jodhpur from there which is the 'Blue City'.Indigo keeps away the mozzies apparently. But I'm not convinced about this theory.
We were staying 5 mins from Mandore Gardens full of cheeky monkeys.

I only got attacked the once.
Totally unprovoked.
Well maybe my video 1" from his face bugged him a bit.
Lovely temples here + others hidden higher up on on hill. But the walk was slightly marred by masses of rabid dogs and a ferocious buffalo with a severe psychiatric disorder.
But we managed to dodge these hazards.
Yesterday went by jeep to spend time with the tree-hugging eco-friendly (very friendly in fact) Bishnoi tribe.

They are heavily into protecting trees and animals and many blackbuck deer roam freely there.
We were lucky to see 2 blue bulls which are apparently very rare.
Ok.
Looking forward to the Elephant Festival in Jaipur tomorrow.

If you wanna lose weight.........

Come to India!
Dont seem to have eaten much in the last week!!
Gave in to the runs and got antibiotics today.
Visit to Doc + 3 lots of tablets cost about 3GPD.
Wonderful service.
I should be over it by the time I touch down at Heathrow!
It hasnt stopped us doing what we wanted. Just a nuisance.
Catching midnight train to Jodhpur tonight.
Dont expect to sleep a wink on train but wanted to experience it.
No doubt we'll cause the usual mayhem and disaster when we board.

oh poo!

Namaste!
It just won't go away.
Just when you think its gone it comes back with avengeance.
But I've not disgraced myself yet and seem very clever at timing my explosions.
Today having very chilled day laying in the dappled shade of our rather 'nace hise' reading the Ramayana. This is a classical poem of Rama, one of the incarnations of Vishnu. Very well known poem in India.(longest poem in the world I think?) You will not be at all surprised that I am not reading the original version in Hindi but a children's illustrated story book in English that I found on the bookshelf. Just my level.
Yesterday hired driver and we did all the sights + more that we were planning to spread over 3 days. Hence the day off.
We deserve it.
But it proved hard work cos the driver knew NO ENGLISH AT ALL.
We were frustrated even before we got to the end of the driveway.
In the end it was 'yeah ok whatever no Hindi'.
And explaining that Jackie really did need to find a toilet pronto involved a rather graphic demonstration in public to get the message across!
But it worked!
And he was pleased cos his back seat was about to change its appearance!

Snake charmers at Monkey temple

charming.......

Included visit to Amber Fort. We hired a guide but dont quiz me on it cos I hardly understood a word he said. Even if I had understood his pronounciation I was distracted by his rather good looks! ( the only good-looking Indian so far, sorry guys.....well apart from Kul of course. Better say that just in case he reads my blog!)
The day before we walked around the old part of Jaipur the 'pink city'.
You expect it to be quite spectacular. Probably was back in 1876 when the town was painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales.
That was a lot of tins of Dulux.
Dirty little beggars....

Well we off to socialise with the Hoi Polloi tonight at the inviitation of the head of Rajasthan Police. Straight up!
Think I might feel a tad out of place!
Actually Kul our host asked if he minded if he dragged us along.
Im sure he just agreed through gritted teeth.
Why would he want riff-raff at his celebrations?
Should be an interesting evening.

ablution update

Rocognize this place......?

Greetings from Rajasthan!
Took early train from Agra on Wednesday. Everyone was sleeping peacefully until we boarded the train................
We were rather noisy and giggly and told them it was time to get up cos we wanted our seats.
They are so tolerant and no-one told us to shutup.
Mind you, they didn't budge either!
So we just sat on them.
Well you can't go to India and not see Taj Mahal and you can't go to India and not get Delhi Belly.
Started to get stomach cramps half hour before arriving at Jaipur and the bad stuff kicked in just after getting to new accom.
But I couldn't have timed it better.
Our hosts in Jaipur are the best anyone could wish for.
They see to our every need and we are being thoroughly spoilt.
Jackie is thinking of cancelling her world trip and just staying here for a year!
They were so concerned about my sickness they warned their doctor friend to expect a call in middle of the night!
But they dosed me up with fresh water/lemon/salt/sugar drink which worked wonders.
Managed fine all day today walking around the city.
Tomorrow we have hired a car and driver to have full day visiting Amer Fort, Nahargarh Fort and few other places outside the city.
We have been invited by our hosts to join their friends at a Hindu temple for a celebration on saturday night. We feel honoured.
Went to look for a sari or Punjabi suit today in bazars but its too much hassle. Shveta our host has offered to take me tomorrow to find one.
Its only an excuse for her to buy another 10 outfits for herself I reckon.
So, all is well here.
We are certainly getting a taste of great Indian hospitality.
But also seeing the other side of things like beggars in the street of which there are many.
Not pleasant and its gets on your wick after a while but has to be experienced.
Its what we've come for after all.To get a feel for Indian life.
And its makes me realise I'm not so poor after all.
Well at least I wouldn't feel poor if I moved to India.
But that is not likely!
I really dont think I should be drinking this beer. Not so soon after the squitters.
If I get the runs I shall blame Kul. He encouraged me.
Ok enough waffle.
Hey, check out this dude at Agra station......
Lazy cow..................

Taj Mahal gets tick in the box

Busy day today. Taj Mahal, Fathepur Sikri and Agra Fort.
Had driver for whole day for 15 GPD (no pound sign!!)
Train Delhi - Agra very good and comfortable and it was on time!!
Felt absolutely fine today and now all i want to do is eat!
Jackie suffered a bit with the runs for a few days but much better today thankfully.
Just thought you might like to know that.
Getting pestered all the time to buy cheap tacky snowstorm thingy keyring of Taj Mahal.
But it doesnt snow in these parts!
Coping well with weather tho yesterday & today no sun :-( .........
..... it would have been useful for the sunrise that we got up at the crack of dawn to see.....!
So......having a great time so far.
Making good use of our time and we both agree on what we want to see and do so working out really well.
Early train to Jaipur "Pink city" tomorrow where we will stay for next 4 nights.

Hope everyone is well back home.

almost ready for the off.....

Leave home about 12noon tomorrow.....
Virtually ready.
Hoping to squeeze everything into a 45 L rucksack. Hmmm.
Knackered.
Off to bed.

Monday, 3 March 2008

OK so now you are asking 'Why on earth has Anji posted a family tree of the Kings and Queens of England?'
'Has she gone completely bonkers?'
Well almost but not quite.
I was seeing if I could upload a pic to my blog in prep for my hols.
And now I know the answer!
This is a poster on the wall next to my PC.
So.
Look and learn.
You might as well learn something interesting while you're here!!
Actually..coincidentally....I do have a (very)
tenuous link to someone on that tree.....
